Thoughts: The His Fair Assassin series has become one of my favorites. It has made me question my belief that I don’t like historical fiction, plus the first two books both have a ton of heart and plenty of swoon. I was nervous and excited for Mortal Heart because it is about Annith, in some ways the most sheltered and naive of the three friends the series follows, and I wanted to protect her by not reading this book.
However, Annith continually surprised me and I enjoyed watching her grow into a young woman, challenging what she had been raised to believe and learning to think on her own. I wasn’t as on board with her romance as I was with the romances in the first two books, but in the end it worked for me. While I also didn’t love the religious exploration as much in Mortal Heart as I did in Grave Mercy and Dark Triumph, the way the bigger story wraps up while staying true to the real history is perfect. I was satisfied as a reader and wasn’t disappointed by the real history in the note at the back.
Favorite Moment: All the times she surprised me when I underestimated her. I’m sorry Annith!
Moment that made me go O.o: The big reveal with the love interest. I saw it coming and really hoped I was wrong, but it didn’t feel as weird as I thought it would.
Overall: Mortal Heart is my least favorite of the series, but still a strong and enjoyable conclusion. (Dark Triumph is my favorite, in case you’re wondering.)

I haven’t read the second book in this series but loved the first book in this series. I have got to get on to the second book since it was your favorite. I knew that Annith was headed to be stuck in the convent and I am so glad she got out!! I didn’t think it would be fair considering everything she’d been through. Great review!!

I’m so afraid to read this lol I love this series but I have several friends who weren’t won over with MH. I’m planning on taking the plunge this weekend so I guess I’ll see for myself.
